Why A Consulting Firm?

While there is something to be said for the power and financial resources that can be leveraged by large consulting firms to address environmental challenges, conflicts of interest often arise. Companies that align themselves with organizations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation or pursue B Corp certification make public commitments to sustainability. These commitments guide their decision making and should be reflected in their partnerships and operations. Consulting agencies gained prominence in the 20th century as businesses sought to expand, refine, and deepen their understanding of their own operations. Instead of relying solely on internal resources, which often lead to a cycle of trial and error, companies began turning to external consultants. These experts, often analysts, lawyers, and strategists, provided insights through research, data modeling, and reporting, ultimately helping businesses make more informed decisions.

Fashion sustainability consulting is a relatively new field, emerging as companies recognize the need to integrate sustainability into their operations. This shift spans production, marketing, sourcing, and various other business functions. Over the past 40 years, the fashion industry has evolved from one centered on quality, to one driven by quantity. As brands chased the bottom line, many began making compromises, particularly in terms of labor conditions and environmental responsibility. The need for sustainability focused consulting has never been greater.

Working with a dedicated consultancy agency allows fashion brands to stay focused on their core business while still advancing their sustainability goals. While some companies attempt to handle forecasting and strategy development internally, the expertise and dedicated time that a consulting firm provides can make all the difference. A team of professionals immersed in the industry, who continually research, track trends, and analyze new developments, offer an invaluable resource. Many brands feel overwhelmed by the idea of transforming their business practices. Sustainable fashion often requires a fundamental systems overhaul, affecting everything from raw material sourcing to marketing and distribution. Every aspect of a company’s operations contributes, either positively or negatively, to its environmental impact. As more brands attempt to transition to sustainable models, they often find themselves stuck. They may have the right intentions but lack the resources, expertise, or infrastructure to execute their goals effectively. This challenge is understandable. When an industry remains unchanged for decades, meaningful shifts can be difficult to navigate. Without the necessary support, how can companies be expected to fully implement sustainability measures and meet rigorous environmental standards?

Typically, companies turn to consulting firms for guidance. However, in the fashion industry, many traditional consultants lack the industry-specific knowledge required to provide truly effective solutions. Consultancy firms are designed to offer objective, third-party insights, helping businesses that are too busy or too entrenched in their own processes to see alternative paths forward. While these consultants may excel at data analysis, they often lack a deep understanding of the industry itself. When addressing a complex issue like sustainability in fashion, a lack of industry experience leads to oversights and miscalculations that can hinder progress.

One of my core motivations for launching this consultancy was the belief that fashion consulting should be approached differently, from the inside out. In my view, the best consultants for the fashion industry are those who have firsthand knowledge of it. While large consulting firms may see an opportunity to expand into fashion sustainability, they often lack the nuanced understanding required to drive real change. While there may be some transferable expertise, it is rarely sufficient to make well-informed decisions that shape a brand’s future. The problem lies in a fundamental disconnect; consulting firms without deep fashion experience approach sustainability with a narrow, often rigid perspective. This results in recommendations that may look good on paper but fail to capture the complexities of the industry. That’s why my approach prioritizes fashion expertise first and consulting second. To drive real change, we need to work within the industry rather than applying generic business frameworks that don’t account for fashion’s unique challenges. Sustainable transformation requires more than just an understanding of supply chain logistics or carbon footprints; it demands an intimate knowledge of design, production cycles, consumer behavior, and the culture surrounding fashion itself. By centering expertise in fashion rather than just consulting, my goal is to offer solutions that are not only strategic but also practical, actionable, and tailored to the realities of the industry.

The fashion industry is at a critical turning point. As sustainability becomes more than just a buzzword, companies that fail to adapt will find themselves struggling to stay relevant in an increasingly eco-conscious market. The challenge is clear: meaningful change is necessary, but it requires the right guidance.
